The story begins with a special ops team led by Colonel John Matrix (Mel Gibson) who has been sent to infiltrate a heavily guarded fortress in the Middle East. The team are challenged by the leader of the fortress, General Garza (Danny Trejo), who turns out to be a double agent. Milo Kretinsky (Jay Baruchel) is an American teenager who lives in New York City with his mother. He is also an aspiring graffiti artist. His best friend, "Pablo" (Emile Hirsch), introduces him to his brother, Dom (Christoffer Orlofski), a local gangster. Dom tells Milo that his father has returned from Afghanistan and wants to meet him at their apartment, but it turns out that he had sent Pablo there with instructions to kill them both when they arrive. Milo's mother, Sabina (Diane Kruger), turns up at the apartment with two SWAT officers. Milo is forced to drive off with Sabina in the car, while Pablos friend Antony (Elijah Wood) walks out onto the street. They are picked up by Triela (Jean Reno), a Russian arms dealer who funds Milo's graffiti by buying his tags for ten dollars each at local subway stations. Triela also gives Milo a "gift" of a bottle of beer, which he drinks for fun. Later, Milo drives Triela back to her hotel after she leaves Antony in the car, then steals her getaway car and drives it to his own house. Sabina and Milo escape the apartment and flee to Triela's hotel. As they travel, Sabina tells Milo about his father and about their relationship. She says that she had an affair with John, whom she assumed to be dead after he was reported missing in action. After they leave, John's colleague Carlos (Randy Couture) is revealed to be the one who had sent Pablo. Milo is dropped off at school where he is taunted by bully Ender (Michael Lerner).
